Once upon a time, there was a girl. She was a very special one, with a
powerful destiny. She had everything a girl could want. She had a strong
man who loved her, loyal friends to guard her back, and a family that was
always there for her.
And then, as often happens to humans, things changed. People that she loved
left her, in various ways. She didn’t feel very special anymore. She felt
quite ordinary. Then one day something very extraordinary happened. She
There was a shadow who had loved the girl. Even though she was gone, the
shadow loved her still. He lived a shadow life, lurking in the dark and
skirting along the edges of the light. It was as good as it had been for a
while. It was as much as a shadow could expect.
Then the girl came back. She was a very special one, with a powerful
destiny. But the girl had a secret. She was a shadow too.
The shadow who loved her knew her secret. But he had his own secret. He
knew how to make her flame and kindle back into the light again.
She came to him, to be her shadow self. He tried to help her light her
flame. It kindled and died each time. She would not let it burn. The shadow
began to think that there was nothing inside her for him to light.
One night, the girl and the shadow lit the fire. The shadow rejoiced. The
very special girl, the one he loved, had returned. A bonfire flared bright
all night, burning high and hot. But in the light of day, she blew out the
fire, and ground the embers into cool, dark dust.
The shadow tried to kindle her flame, again and again. But she withdrew
farther and farther into the darkness, until one day, she was gone. She
walked, and talked, and looked like the one he had loved. But there was
nothing there. Not even an ordinary girl.
Sadly, the shadow turned and walked away, cupping his small spark in his
hands. He went off to find someone to make a flame with, to mate their fire
Maybe an ordinary girl could give him a happily ever after.
