Feb 23, 2008 I've been reading Buffy fanfic for an embarrassingly long time. I just found your work a few weeks ago.
Necessary Evils is the best story I've ever read. Period. I know I'm years behind, but I still had to comment.

Sep 14, 2005 Wonderful story! The characters feel very much right, and I really liked some of the unexpected twists the story took. Your references to literary and/or mythological creatures also kept things interesting. Don't usually need to use wikipedia to keep up with such references, now I did... nice :-). Look forward to starting on your next story!

I have never been so happy to read "not the end." I hope that implies sequels and not just a kind of imagine for yourself what might happen afterward. I'm sure you've been told dozens of times, but I know it never hurts to be told again, you're an awesome writer, your story was darn engaging, and I will be reporting back dutifully for any of your next works. In the meantime, take a break and enjoy yourself, you earned it........okay, break over! Let's see a sequel! :) KC

May 20, 2003 Just finished this fantastic tale . Willow becoming a vampire and learning t deal with it. Great. Spike and Buffy loving each other the way it really should have happened. Please Please continue writing more sequels there is so much more continuity for Spike and Buffy and the scoobies. Their world never ends. A good writer is hard to find.

May 16, 2003 You rock my world! I've really enjoyed this fic from beginning to end. Especially loved Willow's account of just how it feels to wake up a vampire. Hope you write a sequel if you are so inspired. I know I'll be re-reading this one again and again. Love the world you have created, Buffy's dad and his wife, and now vamp Willow. Best of all I love the relationship between Buffy and Spike. Angsty, conflicted but not hopeless, and with great sex and laughs. Thanks so much. You have a rare talent.

May 16, 2003 So sad to see this lovely fic come to an end. But it was a great ride, thanks for sharing it with us. I love your characterizations and the wit with which you write. I hope you'll continue to write Spuffy fics, perhaps even a sequel to NE. I'll be on the lookout for any more Barb fics.

May 16, 2003 I always get depressed after a good story ends - no more of that wonderful anticipation and thrill of a new chapter. That being said, Necessary Evils (along with A Raising in the Sun)is definitely one of the top 10 long form Buffy fics out there. Definitely. It's been a great ride, thank you!!

May 1, 2003 Oh Barb,
NE has been amazing from start to finish. I loved Raising, and spent a lot of time running around the web recommending it to people. The line (probably not exact) ''He was one big mass of Buffy longing, wrapped up in black leather and hope'' continues to be, IMO, the best descrpitive line of Spike ever written.
NE has been a more than worthy sequel. If only, if only, if only...
These last chapters were great. I, too, loved the tragedy of the alternate futures Buffy and Spike visualized. (Though I suspect you were jabing at ME just a little -- right? Just a bit?) I''m so glad they reacted as they did, making the decision to fight together, one day at a time, if necessary, FOR a future. Together.
And your concerns about whether you had succeeded in your scenes that went beyond the ''tasteful pan to the fireplace''? Um, you can just let those concerns go, Barb. Trust me.
You gave me Spike and Buffy as I wanted them. Struggling but not despairing, ups and downs, avoiding both fluff and the tragedy of bitterness and lack of hope. For that, I thank you more than you can know.
Gotta say -- Willow trying to forcibly vamp herself on Spike? Truly one of the most horrific and tragic things I''ve ever read in a fic. I desperately hope she didn''t succeed. I can''t imagine how Spike and Buffy could deal with that... and they damned well deserve a break from Willow''s machinations.
I cannot wait for the epilogue. And I would love another sequel, or, if not a sequel, some other B/S stories from you. I''m unsure where I read it - at your site, perhaps? - that you''re uncertain whether you''ll continue writing in the fandom, whether the interest will be there. I can only say that it''s here, in me, and in a LOT of people I know. I''m already heartbroken by the impending ending of the series, and I hope that you''ll decide to continue to entertain us with your wonderful imagination and talent. You''ve treated Spike with the care and consideration that ME never quite gave him, and for that, too, you have my gratitude.
Thank you, Barb, for your vision, and for sharing it with us.
Mary

May 1, 2003 I''ve reviewed "Necessary Evils" a couple of times back on fanficnet, but I might just as well come out and say it on this site as well: Your story is beyond wonderful. I''ve just finished chapter 36 and I''m still in awe. That Hellmouth finale was stunning, to say the least, as well as being totally in character for all people involved, from scared but irrepressible Dawn to poor, evil, broken Willow.
The intensely moving scene where Buffy and Spike faced their alternative futures and the very real possibility that most, if not all, of them will end in tragedy, but still chose to hold on to each other brought tears to my eyes. A love that strong can, and in this case did, change worlds.
You and Mary are the best fanfic writers out there, and how I wish ME had picked either of your visions for Season 6...

I am so completely in love with this story. This is the Season-6-that-should-have-been, small arcs marking out a beautiful larger arc that tests the limits of the characters and brings out the best in them.
Your grasp of myth is lovely, and it underpins every bit of the storytelling. I just don't have words for how wonderful I've found it. Thanks so much for writing it.
